Attendance and Grading Policy

I take attendance daily.  In language classes attendance is critical since the material builds on earlier lessons.  It is extremely difficult to "catch-up" in a language class.
  • Since 25% of your grade is based on participation in class activities (in Spanish), attendance is vital. The class grade is negatively affected after two absences in classes which meet 2 days a week and 3 absences in classes which meet 3 days a week.  For each successive absence, two points will be lost from the final grade.
In sections with two 2 1/2 hour format, missing one day is really the equivalent of missing two one-hour classes and half of a third class!
  • Since late arrivals are disruptive, please make every effort to arrive a few minutes early: 3 lates add up to one absence.
You are responsible for reading the assigned pages of the text - which includes taking notes of grammar points, writing down any questions you may have and writing out the related exercises from the textbook.  It is helpful to read the dialogues and articles out loud.  The textbook and the website provide detailed explanations of the grammar, so I will not be teaching grammar in the classroom: rather, I will review the grammar points with all of you, pointing out anything extra not included in the text.   Then you will practice using the grammar in class activities.
  • The homework and studying prepares you to participate fully in class activities.  If you aren't prepared, I have nothing to grade you on for class participation, pronunciation and group contributions.
You'll need a notebook for  all of your notes (class and text), homework and tests.  All of your notes and handouts will be helpful when studying for exams.  Please keep your notes and all returned quizzes, tests and corrected homework. They are great for reviewing and studying.  Also, they serve as a record of your grade.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to go to the website www.drlemon.net/spanish101A.html and check the Horario [class material] pages as well as the Quia Homework website.  Otherwise, contact a classmate and find out what we did and what, if any, assignments are due and bring them with you the first day you return to class.
  • Late and/or incomplete homework is not accepted.

  • Copying from the Answer Key prompts of the any computer exercises or any written exercises, ANY copied or plagarized work, work submitted that is not your own, clicking "I have completed this exercise" when the computer tracking shows you have not done this exercise, and/or any other form of Academic Dishonesty will result in a zero on the copied or plagiarized work as well as any work submitted prior to this work! The student will receive an F for the Class Participation grade.  The student also may be dropped from the course and will be reported to the appropriate Deans.  Copying Answers provided by Answer Keys or claiming to have completed an on-line exercise which was not actually done constitute cheating.
  • Students cheating on Exams (copying, soliciting answers, cheatsheets of any form, etc.) will be dropped from the course with a formal report to the Dean of Students.
  • Submitting previously done or submitted work or work done by another person will result in the student being dropped from the course with a formal report to the Dean of Students.

Grading Policy

I will be evaluating laboratory attendance, the lab manual and workbook chapters, other homework and class assignments, performance on tests and quizzes, partner and group tasks, attendance (incl. arriving and leaving on time), being prepared for class and active use of Spanish in class.

A = 100-90% B = 89-80% C = 79=70% D = 69=60% F = 59-0%
Half of your grade (50%) is based on attendance, class participation, homework, laboratory attendance.  Doing well on this half of your grades will help you to do well on the other (exams) half.

Make-up Policy

  • Only 1 (one) chapter exam may be made up.
  • You must make-up the exam prior to the next class meeting.  For example: if our class meets MW 9am-11:15pm and you miss the exam on Monday, you must had made it up prior to 9am on Wednesday.  If the exam is on Wednesday, you are responsible to contact me to arrange a make-up by Friday.  However, once exams have been returned to a class, a make-up for that exam is not permitted.
  • It is your responsibility to contact me to make arrangements for the make-up exam.
  • Quizzes are generally unannounced and may not be made up.
Note:
Cell phones and/or pagers must be turned off in the classroom during class.
Use of cell phones and/or pagers is not permitted.
Computer use:
Computers in the classroom are to be used for class activities as directed by the instructor.  Inappropriate use of computers, including Instant Messaging, chatrooms, games, unrelated web-pages etc., will result in a zero for class participation and possible reports filed with department deans.
