| Spanish for Law Enforcement
Personnel (SLEP) is divided into three sections. In Section 1, you
will learn the Spanish alphabet, basic grammar constructions and vocabulary
to help provide a foundation for further Spanish language studies.
The focus of this section is basic vocabulary and communication skills.
We will work primarily in the present tense and simple future. We
will concentrate also on building vocabulary. In Section 2, we will
move to the intermediate grammar level, learning the future tense, commands
and expressions and vocabulary relevant to Traffic Control and Emergency
situations. In Section 3, we continue to build on the earlier material,
adding more advanced grammar and vocabulary. We will learn the past
tenses, formal commands and vocabulary pertinent to Crime Scenes and Community
Relations. |
| Because
you are not in a traditional classroom environment where you can practice
your oral skills with other students, it is vital that you practice with
the course cassette tapes (or CD's) to develop listening and speaking skills.
If you can, seek out a native speaker and practice some of the things we
will learn in this course. Remember, accents and vocabulary will
vary between Spanish-speaking countries, much as English varies between
the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Belize and Australia.
What you will hear on the audio tapes is primarily a Latin-American accent. |
| Additionally, this
course is designed to provide you with information on Hispanic culture,
emphasizing the diversity among Spanish-speaking countries. Both
of your text books provide insights into cultural differences. I
will expand on several of these Conflictos Culturales. |
