COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this 5 unit course you will learn further essential elements of Spanish language structure, vocabulary, and aspects of Hispanic culture. Spanish 101B focuses on grammar,  conversational expressions,  and vocabulary.  The focus of this course is to continue to build vocabulary and communication skills.   You will be introduced to the Preterite and Imperfect  past, Future  and Perfect tenses as well as the Conditional and the Subjunctive mood.  Additionally, this course is designed to provide you with information on Hispanic culture, emphasizing the diversity among Spanish-speaking countries.  This course is five (5) credit units because you are working on (and graded on) reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

In class we will concentrate on listening and speaking skills through a variety of activities. Most reading and writing skills will be addressed through homework, projects and exams.

There will be 2 hours per week completed on-line (in addition to the 1 hour per week lab requirement): these hours will be fulfilled through a variety of on-line programs (such as Tribe and Quia) and also through field trips.

REQUIRED TEXTS:
Dawson: Dicho y Hecho, 7th ed. (textbook)
Dawson: Dicho y Hecho, 7th ed. Electronic Online Activity Manual Code

If you already purchased a 7th edition Dicho y Hecho text and Book key codes for Spanish 101A,

you do NOT need to make any additional purchases for 101B.

By the end of this course, you will be using all of the material included in the text.  This is not nearly as intimidating as it may at first appear since the material is progressive, building upon the earlier materials.  Once you have a good grasp of the materials in chapter 8, you can apply these in chapter 9; and then you apply the concepts of chapter 8 and 9 in chapter 10.  The key is to do a little Spanish each day, rather than doing huge chunks of grammar  at one time.
You are responsible for reading the assigned pages of the text - which includes taking notes of grammar points, writing down any questions you may have and writing out the related exercises from the textbook.  It is helpful to read the dialogues and articles out loud.  You'll need a notebook for all of your notes (class and text), homework and tests.  All of your notes and handouts will be helpful when studying for exams.  The homework and studying prepares you to participate fully in class activities.  If you aren't  prepared, I have little to grade you on for class participation, pronunciation and group contributions.
Please keep your notes and all returned chapter tests and corrected homework. They are great for reviewing and studying.  Also, they serve as a record of your grade.
I encourage you to form study groups outside of class. Use our class Tribe to exchange emails with other students or post questions, ideas and comments. This is one of the best ways to study, practice and review.
You will need to contact classmates or the professor if you are absent.
If you would like more individualized assistance, you may request a tutor at the Tutorial Center.  Call as soon as you decide you want a tutor since popular hours are taken quickly.
